Food, Civil Supllies and Consumer Affairs Department said, depletion of rice stock in Zuangtui Muanna Godown is temporary, not to cause scarcity. In reply to our Corr. the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Secretary, Mr. K. Riachho said, the depleting stock in the Godown is mainly because of delay in release order which will not cause problem in the normal issue and distribution of ration to the consumers. He also said, the Department has deposited money for purchase of rice for the current month and the rice from FCI Godown in Tanhril and other places will be transported immediately to Zuangtui Godown to replenish the stock. Meanwhile our news reporter who visited FCI Godown in Tanhril found a large quantity of rice stock and some more being unloaded into the Godown from the Trucks. It may be recalled that the ZNP youths who inspected the Godown yesterday reported that there is no rice stock for issue to the ration shops in Aizawl and the adjoining villages.

Supply of drinking water to the people of Aizawl town is less since the last few months as compared to the previous months. According to official sources, the water supply is less because of the on going replacement of power driven two water pump sets in Greater Aizawl Water Supply Scheme Phase-I and replacement of the power Panel Boards. The Department Engineer also said, installation of the new Multi Stage Horizontal Pump Sets will be installed after completion of the work for construction of the foundation. Meanwhile the Department Engineers continues the work to complete the remaining works in Greater Aizawl Water Supply Scheme Phase-II. Pipe laying and the hydrolic test is being completed in the near future while other works like construction of the Jack Well, the Weir and RCC Bridge across Serlui river are going on smoothly.

The people of Saiha and Lawngtlai are also facing accute scarcity of water. Our Saiha Corr. reported, only 2 of the 4 Water Supply Scheme can supply little quantity of water to the people of Saiha and the rest two are virtually running dry at present. Meanwhile long queues are seen in the 3 underground water pumps in the town and spring water points around the District Hqrs. town waiting for water. In the meantime the PHE Department is pursuing Tuitlawk river water supply project which will cost around 3100 lakh rupees. In Lawngtlai town, the PHE Department has started distribution of water by two Trucks since the last week. Our Lawngtlai Corr. said, this is not sufficient to meet the requirement of the people as 5 Water Supply Schemes for the town are virtually dry now.

A mile tremor of 5.5 magnitude in the Richter Scale rocked Aizawl and the adjoining areas at 4:49 this morning. Accoring to sources from Geology and Mining Wing of Mizoram and the North East Institute of Technology Laboratory in Jorhat, the aerial distance of the epicentre of the quake is 120 Killometres east of Aizawl which is presumed to be Indo-Myanmar border area and its origin is at the depth of 81 Killometres below the surface of the earth. There is no damage of casualty reported so far.

AMFU leaders of Saiha District accompanied by the DC, Mr. Kunal and the Coordinator of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Mr. Lalhmingmuana visited private farms and gardens in Kawlchaw-Tuipuiferi area today. Our Saiha Corr. who accompanied them reported that the visitors were happy to see the fruits and crops cultivated by the farmers. They were also impressed by the fish ponds constructed by them in commercial size.

Serchhip District Hqrs. has become the fifth MPSC Exam Centre. A notification to this effect is issued recently by the MPSC. Earlier the MPSC has opened exam centres in Aizawl, Lunglei, Champhai and Saiha for conducting examinations for recruitment of organized services.

The forest in the vicinity of Melriat and Hualngohmun villages were ravaged by wild fire which broke out from Samtlang village land last Thursday. As the fire engulfed the two villages, volunteers from the villages and the Fire Tenders of the Police fought against the fire for several hour and could successfully put it out. ………. There was no human casualty or damage of properties.

Reports on forest fire was also received from some villages. In Serchhip, a vast area in the western side above Mat river valley was devastated by forest fire. The people of Serchhip-I could managed to control it after fighting against it for the whole day.

Chapchar K<t was celebrated in Central Jail today for entertainment of the jail inmates. Addressing the function, the DIG Prison, Mr. Kapchhuanthanga asked the inmates to use their jail term for training to live a new life when they are discharged. The artists of Mizo Zaimi Inzawmkhawm entertained them with their sweet and melodious voices. Our Corr. understands that there are 424 prisioners in the Central Jail presently.

The leaders of Baptist Church of Mizoram discussed various proposals for amendment of the constitution and other rules relating to administration of the Church in the on going BCM Assembly in Lawngtlai. The business session which begun from Thursday was presided over by the BCM President, Rev. C. Rothuama. Earlier, Rev. Dr. K. Thanzauva was elected the new President of the BCM. The Executive Committee also had already selected Rev. H. Lianngaia to be the next General Secretary. Our Lawngtlai Corr. reported that there are 1 lakh, 31 thousand 185 members in Mizoram Baptist Church at present.

Run for peace was organized by the 10th Assam Rifles from Sikulpuikawn this morning was flagged off by the Health Minister, Mr. Lalrinliana Sailo. The peace fun was organized by the Assam Rifles in connection with the on going celebration of the 175th raising day and and it ended in the AR Parade Ground. Addressing the rally in Sikulpuikawn, Major Lalit Kashyap said, the Assam Rifles are friends of the hill people who play major role in security and development of the North East. He also mentioned the heroic surcrifices made by the Assam Rifles during the second World War.
