Observation of fire prevention week begins all over Mizoram today. In the main inauguration function held in Information Department’s Auditorium, the Chief Minister, Mr. Lal Thanhawla said, protection of the forest from fire is the duty of everyone to sustain the new generation. Recalling rampant forest fire during the last year, the Chief Minister asked the villages to complete burning of new jhums during February. He also underlined the need to educate the new generation towards protection of forest and wild life. The Environment and Forest Minister, Mr. H. Rohluna also addressed the function and said, protection of forest should not be left only to the Forest Department. The people are to aware that it is the duty of everyone. The meeting was also addressed by the Chairman of Sub-Committee on State Level Fire Prevention Committee, Mr. Lal Thanzara and the Central YMA Vice President, Mr. C. Zoramliana. In Champhai District, observation of the week was inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Vijay Kumar Bidhuri at a function in Venglai Community Hall. Addressing the gathering in Mizo, the Deputy Commissioner asked the people to make effort to extinguish the fire in case they come across forest fire and report the incident to the Police Control Room immediately. He also asked the Village Councils to make a stock of water to enable the people to extinguish the fire immediately. In Serchhip, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. H. Darzika inaugurated the fire prevention week and asked the people to try their level best to get the first prize in prevention of fire during this year. He also underlined the need for creation of fire prevention awareness among the general mass. In Kolasib District, the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. R. Liankima inaugurated the week at a function held in Diakkawn Square. He asked all villages to participate in the awareness drive launched from today. In Mamit District, observation of fire prevention week is yet to begin with campaign in rural areas. Programmes for the campaign have been chalked out in the meeting held yesterday under the chairmanship of the Deputy Commissioner, Mr. Zothankhuma. The campaign involving officials, NGOs and the Village Councils will cover a number of villages. In Lunglei, the week observation campaign begins from next Tuesday to cover selected 10 villages which are prone to fire. These are Putlungasih, =awipui South, Lungrang South, South Vanlaiphai, Thingsai leh Tarpho, Cherhlun, Bunghmun, Haulawng, Hnahthial and Lungsen villages.

In Lawngtlai District, observation of the week was inaugurated this morning by Addl. DC, Mr. Vanlalngena at the function held in Areopagi. In Saiha, fire prevention week was already inaugurated yesterday byt the PHE Minister, Mrs. S. Hiato. Addressing the function, the Minister asked the people to make a concerted effort for protection of forest and wild lives in it. In Saiha District, Mara Autonomous District Council and MTP, the largest NGO have already started joint campaign in rural areas to create awareness in fire prevention.

Mizo National Front accused the Government of delaying payment to passion fruit growers who supplied passion fruits to the fruit processing plant of MIFCO. In a press release, the Party also alleged that the liability to be cleared by the Government is over 44 lakh rupees. Quoting information received through RTI Act, the Party also alleged that the accumulated amount for payment of MIFCO staff salaries also is over 54 lakh rupees.

One woman was killed in a Truck accident in Folkland Veng last night. According to Bawngkawn Police sources, Lalsawmliani of Dawrpui Jail Veng succumbed to her injuries in Aizawl Civil Hospital, this morning and the driver Vanhmingliana also is submitted to the hospital with serious injury. The ill fated Truck laden with rice rolled down about 150 metres from the road surface. Registering a case, the Police have started investigation into the cause of accident.

Bamboo Development Agency, Mizoram and Indian Tobacco Company (ITC), Chennai have signed an agreement for export of round Agarbatti sticks. According to the press release of Mizoram Bamboo Development Agency, the Agarbatti sticks are being produced in their centres at Saiha, Lunglei and Haulawng. The ITC has placed an order for 10 Tons of the Agarbatti sticks which will be procured at 35 rupees per kg.

Thenzawl NGO Coordination Committee has called off its proposed total bandh slated for tomorrow and the day-after indefinitely. This decision was taken in a joint meeting held in Thenzawl last night. The Deputy Commissioner of Serchhip Mr. H. Darzika and the SP Mr. John Zothansanga told them that the government will not allow disruption of normal life in any case and take appropriate action against those who try to create problem for others. They also inform them that the Police are not to be stationed only in one place and their duty is to rush to any place where they are required for maintenance of law and order. They were also informed that Thenzawl is not the Battalion Hqrs of the 4th IR battalion and the PTC in Thenzawl will remain with the officers and staff to conduct training whenever necessary. The meeting was also attended among others by the SDO Civil, Mr. H. Dolianbuaia, the Officer incharge of Thenzawl Police Station Mr V.Lalduhawma and other village leaders. The NGO Coordination Committee however passed a number of resolutions which included their demand for up-gradation of the Police Training Centre to become a full-fledged Training Centre within February and creation of the 5th IR battalion Hqrs in Thenzawl.

Aizawl Development Authority (ADA) expressed gratitude for constitution of a committee which will review ADA. In a press release, the ADA said, the Building Regulations being enforced by the Authority has positive role to play while a number of clauses in it need amendment.

Social Welfare Minister, Mr.PC Lalthanliana inaugurated new ICDS Project in Bilkhawthlir yesterday. Addressing the function, the Minister said, the same type of Project was inaugurated in Saiha yesterday and one project each will be inaugurated on Friday at Champhai and Bungtlang South. The Minister was accompanied by Mr. K. Lalrinthanga, MLA and Social Welfare Department Director, Mr. Vanchungnunga.

The Health Minister, Mr. Lalrinliana Sailo visited a number of villages in Champhai District during the last 3 days. In Khawhai and Biate, he inspected the on going construction of Primary Health Centre and Community Health Centre respectively. He also laid the foundation stone of District Hospital in Champhai which will be constructed at the cost of 19 crore rupees. Mr. Lalrinliana, who also is the Trade and Commerce Minister also inspected the Composite Land Custom Station in Zokhawthar and supervised installation of essential equipments by different Line Departments.

Two new hostel buildings of DOEACC in Zuangtui were inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Mr. Lal Thanhawla today. The two hostels were constructed at the cost of over 10 crore rupees. Addressing the function, the Chief Minister said, Information Technology has transformed a new life and the students have to avail this opportunity to get new knowledge which will pave the way for positive development. The new hostels consists of 41 double bedded rooms for boys and 51 single bedded rooms for girls. The Chief Minister was accompanied by IT Minister, Mr. Zodintluanga, the Parliamentary Secretary, Mr. Lal Thanzara, Mr. Lalrinmawia, the KVI Board Chairman, Mr. K.Lianzuala and other MLAs.
