The Chief Minister, Mr. Lal Thanhawla said, Union Cabinet has approved 2416 crore rupees for meeting the fund requirement of Mizoram for implementation of NLUP. Addressing the function held in Kolasib today in connection of inauguration of Sports Training Centre and the Sports Office, the Chief Minister also said, Central Government headed by Dr. Manmohan Singh appreciated the NLUP and promised to provide all the fund requirement for implementation of the flagship policy. Referring to power shortage being faced by the people of the State, the Chief Minister expressed regret for abandonment of 60 megawatts Tuirial Hydel Project by NEEPCO because of alleged compensation issue. He also said that the peak load demand of Mizoram is about 65 megawatts and this could have been met with locally generated power had the inflated compensation not been demanded. He also expressed regret over the people’s madness for compensation which hampered development projects. Referring to the Government’s initiative for improvement of education quality in the State, the Chief Minister said, new education policy will be formulated when the Education Reform Commission submit its report to the Government in the near future.The Director General of Border Roads Organisation, Lt Gen. M.C. Badhani called on the Chief Minister, Mr. Lal Thanhawla in his official residence last evening. During the meeting, the Chief Minister informed the Director General of Border Road Organization that the National Highway No. 54 is the main lifeline of Mizoram which needs proper maintenance.

Mara Thalai Pawl and Environment and Forest Department of Mara Autonomous District Council are jointly spear heading District wide campaign for prevention of forest fire during the present dry season. The campaign was kicked off last Wednesday evening by holding public meetings in Theiva, Maubawk (L), Maubawk (Ch) and Zeropoint and the campaign continues. Our Saiha Corr. reported that the MTP leaders and officials of Environment and Forest Department of MADC are to tour to rural areas next week to cover Romibawk, Phalhrang, Riasikah, Tuisumpui and Tuipuiferi villages.

Rawpuichhip Water Supply Scheme constructed at the cost of 88 lakh rupees was inaugurated by the PHE Minister, Mr. S. Hiato yesterday. Addressing the function, the Minister said, need for water increases while the sources of water are depleting. He also asked the people to conserve their water source and protect their forest from fire and other forms of destruction. Our Corr. reported that water supplied to the people of Rawpuichhip is from Tuisiamhnar source which is pumped to the village by 2 pumping sets. Presently the families in the village can get water from 15 public points. The Minister was accompanied by the Dy. Speaker, Mr. John Rotluangliana, Parliamentary Secretary, Mr. H.Zothangliana and Department officers.

Pastorate level Kristian Thalai Pawl Conference has begun in all the Pastorates since last night. A number of decisions concerning the Pastorate Level KTP were taken today by the delegates besides election of their new leaders for the term of one year. Worship service is going on in the Churches tonight which will be followed by fellowship programme and the Conference concludes tomorrow night.

The Ist MAP Battalion Hockey Team has won Republic Day Hockey Tournament trophy. In a contesting final match played in Assam Rifles Parade Groud this afternoon, the Ist MAP Team defeated the Ist IR Battalion Team by 4-3 to win the trophy. Earlier, Durtlang Women Hockey Association defeated Ropuiliani Hockey Club, Zonuam by 2-0 to win the champion trophy.
