The people of Maraland are soon to go to polls to elect 77 Village Councils in Mara Autonomous District Council area. Our Saiha Corr. reported that official notification calling for the VC general is expected tomorrow. According to prior information given by the Mara Autonomous District Council, the polling will be held on the 12th of this month. Meanwhile the MADC which will conduct the VC election has made all necessary ground preparations including revision of the Village Council electoral rolls. Returning officers and polling officers to conduct the polling have also been selected and their appointment will be issued in a couple of days. The Deputy Commissioner and the District SP are expected to make security arrangement for the polling. It may be recalled that the Village Council elections in the District has become overdue and the term of the present Village Councils have been extended twice for 6 months each.

Champhai District Magistrate, Mr. TV Fambol expressed gratitude to the people of Myanmar particularly those living in Khawmawi and Rihkhawdar villages for rendering the much needed assistance to the people of Mizoram in times of need. Referring to the fatal Bus accident which took place near Rihkhawdar on the 28th September and another incident in which a child of Khawzawl village got drowned in Rih lake on the 24th of October, the Deputy Commissioner described the valuable service rendered by people of the two villages as a symbol of unity of the people of the two countries which have inseparable blood relations and family ties. As a token of expression of gratitude, the Deputy Commissioner also presented 5 silpaulins, a petromax and 10 thousand rupees to the youth association of Rihkhawdar at a function held in Rihkhawdar yesterday. The Deputy Commissioner was accompanied by officers, YMA Sub Hqrs. leaders and the Journalists.

Two boys drowned in artificial pond at Champhai paddy field. Our Champhai Corr. reported that a search for the two 12 year old boys, Zomuansanga and Lalramnghaka of Champhai Zotlang was launched after their relatives found their dresses on the side of the pond and found the body of the boys in the pond this afternoon. Both of them are student of Little Rose private English School in Champhai. Their funeral will take place tomorrow in Zotlang.

The newly constituted Welfare Committee of the New Capital Complex is to begin night watch from this evening. According to the press release, the Welfare Committee has constructed night watch posts with a view to prevent unlawful activities within the Secretariat premises.

A free clinic cum blood donation camp was organized today by Kulikawn Branch YMA in connection with celebration of their new Community Hall. The doctors and supporting staff examined and treated 321 patients. The youths also donated 48 units of blood for patients in Aizawl Civil Hospital. …………….

Greater Aizawl Water Supply Scheme Phase II has been restored to functioning order once again after rectification of the defective Circuit Transmitter in the feeder Power Sub Station in Luangmual and the defective Valve in the Pump House at Dihmunzawl. According to Departmental sources, the defective Valve at the Pump House in Dinhmunzawl has been replaced during the last 2 days under the supervision of the Chief Engineer and the project has started pumping water from noon today. It may be recalled that Greater Aizawl Water Supply Scheme Phase-II is only in partial functioning order by sharing the Intake and pipes of Greater Aizawl Water Supply Scheme Phase-I till today.

The people of Bungkawn High School Veng organized social work today to repair the road between Nursery and Maubawk via Bungkawn High School Veng. Talking to our Corr. the leader of the locality said that this road, constructed in 1984 remained neglected for so many years despite their repeated request to make it all season roads. Our Corr. understands that the present Government has included this road in the work schedule for the current financial year and administrative approval and technical sanction are still awaited.

Ex-Servicemen of the 3rd Battalion Assam Regiment celebrated their 15th raising day today in Sainik Rest House, Khatla. Those who addressed the function highlighted commendable role played by the 3rd Assam Regiment in the war with China and Pakistan. They also observed a minute of silence for those who have made supreme sacrifice for protection of the country. The function was presided over by the President, Honorary Captain, Pasena Sailo. ……….

Meanwhile the 10th Assam Riffles also concluded celebration of the 53rd raising day yesterday. Cultural programmes and sports were organized during the 3 day long celebration. Wreaths were also laid by the officers including the Battalion Commandant, Colonel Wallia in Assam Riffle Martyrs Memorial to pay tribute to the brave riflemen who have made supreme sacrifice for the country.

The first meeting of the newly constituted Executive Committee of Central YMA was held in Central YMA Office today. The meeting was presided over by the new President, Mr. Lalchungnunga which was attended by nearly 60 Executive Members. A new Sub Committee to be headed by the Vice President, Mr. C. Zoramliana has been formed to pursue social reform which is the theme selected for a year long campaign of the YMA. Another Sub Committee to be headed by the General Secretary, Mr. Lalbiakzuala was also formed to pursue detection and deportation of foreign nationals who infiltrated into the State illegally. The Executive Committee also reviewed the last General Conference held in Darlawn and expressed satisfaction at the free and fair conduct of the Office Bearers’ election. It may be recalled that the new Office Bearers took charge on the 26th October from the out going leaders.

The devotees in Aizawl joined the country wide celebration of the 340th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak in Pushpak Gurudwara in Zemabawk today. The function was marked by singing and chanting of Shabbat Kirtan as well as meditation. ……………. Born on 2nd November in 1469, Guru Nanak Dev preached to the people that there is only one God, the creator. He also took up the cause of women, downtrodden and the poor. He also attacked the caste system and theocracy.

Wushu Team of Mizoram who wons Team Championship in the North East Wushu Champion held in Shillong during the third week of October were felicitated by Mizoram Wushu Association in Central YMA hall today. …………. Mizoram Team won 21 Gold medals, 9 silver and 5 bronze medals to win the team championship.
